Mini Sausage Hamburgers (Tortas)
Delicious sausage hamburgers are always a hit anywhere we go. We did one of our favorite tortas post not too long ago. These tortas, in particular, however are my husband’s favorite and yet they are so simple to make that even my little boys help me with the prep. To be honest, I developed this recipe from trial, throwing together ingredients I thought would taste good, and then adding to it the next time I would make them.
So below you will find my “base” ingredients with a suggested ingredients to really make your tortas pop! Enjoy! I know your whole family will NOT be disappointed. My boys even grab them out of the fridge cold as they are even delicous, moist, and yummy cold! (They may even be better cold out of the fridge).
The recipe below is doubled. You can always half it (but I don’t know why you would when you can have delicious easy snacks available as left-overs in the fridge!)
Mini Sausage Hamburgers
Basic Ingredients
- 2 lbs sausage (we have also used 1 lb sausage/ 1lb turkey….basic whatever I have in the freezer…but one part should be sausage)
- 3 large carrots, shredded (ours were small, so we used the equivalent)
- 1 large onion, diced
- 2 tbsp spicy brown mustard
- 2 tbsp garlic & parsley (this stuff rocks!)
- 1 tbsp rosemary
- 2-3 drops of Stevia
- 2 eggs
- salt (generous dash or two)
- POP Ingredients:
- If not using a grill to cook your tortas, we have found a few dashes of your favorite flavor of liquid smoke to be a key ingredient!
- Sage (fresh)
Preparation
1. In a large bowl add ALL the ingredients and mix.
2. Next add the meat and mix. I like to use a big baggie to mix everything well (vegetable bag, ziplock, grocery bag, whatever works….I’m sure gloves would work if you have them as well…of course, you can just use your hands, too).
3. Bring bowl over to your cooking mechanism. For this time, I used a non-stick skillet and needed no grease. However, in the past I have used the oven and the grill. My sister said she has also done them in the slow cooker with wadded up foil balls at the bottom. Form patties and cook thoroughly on both sides. I cooked about 4 min each side, but your time will depend on your torta size, thickness, and cooking method.
4. Serve topped with homemade mayo or ketchup and along side your favorite veggies, sweet potato, and or green salad!
